Voters approve most school levies!

Local voters approved at least 151 of 157 school levies earlier this month, which proves voters support their local public schools.

  • 164 districts have a voter approved levy that expires at the end of 2012
  • 156 districts put an M&O replacement levy on the February ballot (one other district ran an election to increase an existing school levy)
  • All but five districts are currently passing their levies – Deer Park, Eatonville, Lyle, Riverside and West Valley (Yakima)
  • More than 50 of the levies benefited from the passage of the simple majority for school levies in 2007. Those levies total more than $1 billion in school funding.

“We won the simple majority campaign by 16,596 votes seven days after the polls closed, ending up with roughly 50.6 percent of the vote,” said Rod Regan, WEA’s director of governmental relations. “The hard work we all did in that campaign continues to pay dividends today, in a much tougher economic climate.

The next available date for levy elections is Tuesday, April 24, 2012. School districts must inform the county auditor by March 10, 2012 (at least forty-five days in advance of the election date) of their intent run a levy.
